Bundock Wetlands Art Competition

Organised by Moverly Precinct Committee and the Bundock Street Project Group.

Prizes presented by the Hon. Laurie Brereton, MP for Kingsford-Smith, Councillor Dominic Sullivan, Mayor of Randwick and Suzanne Dawson, artist at Bundock Street Community Centre.

The Bundock St. Art Competition was very successful with over 40 art works received and displayed in the Bowen Library for three weeks. Our Sponsors, Local Member, The Hon. Laurie Brereton and Mayor of Randwick, Dominic Sullivan judged the art and presented prizes totaling $500.00. They both commented on the quality and standard of the art and expressed the view that the 'wetlands' must be preserved and protected for the benefit of the community. The prize-winning works are to be mounted, framed and displayed at Council.

Council also sent out merit awards to the winners and certificates to all participants. The event was covered by the local press and a photo of the sponsors and the artists with their prize-winning works appeared the following week in the Southern Courier.

The Bundock Wetlands lie between Bundock Street and Holmes Street in Randwick, in land managed by the Department of Defence. They cover 3 hectares of Eastern Suburbs Banskia Scrub (ESBS), a State and Commonwealth-listed endangered ecological community. The ESBS contains over 50 native plant species and 3 hectares of ephemeral wetlands, which are home to 40 bird species, a number of frog species and the eastern long-necked tortoise. There are also 3.5 hectares of landfill, now playing fields. They were first described in 1866 by the Sydney Water Board and are now the only remaining extant wetlands in Randwick outside Botany Bay National Park. Their integrity is under threat from continuing urban development.
