Intelligent Design vs Random Fluke

Stephen Wolfram, the creator of 'Mathemattica', has published a book that he believes will begin a revolution in science. In "A New Kind of Science" he claims that life fills every evolutionary niche by following a set of simple rules that produce complex patterns. For instance, he purports to explain why only 5 distinct types of shell appear naturally.

Many people believe that the complexity in the natural world could only be the result of an 'intelligent design' by a creator with a purpose and , while others believe that the appearance of complex life is a 'fluke' brought on by chance circumstance and the laws of physics alone.

In this debate two teams argue for and against an 'Intelligent Design' in nature.

  • Team 1: Argues that the evidence for intelligent design is all around us > if we only open our minds. The complexity evident in the natural world could not have arisen by chance. They will present arguements that the most likely explanation for complex life is that it was preconcieved by a creator.
  • Team 2: Argues that the universe was not designed, and that the given > enough time complex life will arise to take advantage of prevaling conditions. Natural selection, combined with the basic process of mutation, makes design possible in nature without recourse to a supernatural explanation.
